CRIME & MYSTERY. Lady Elspeth is in Paris visiting a friend from boarding school who is the sister of her intended fiance, when Belgium falls to the Germans and the Germans move to invade France. Trying to get home to England, Elspeth is trapped at the port in Calais. There are wounded men everywhere, and Elspeth puts herself in danger by taking them water. To her rescue comes rugged Captain Peter Gilcrist, who pulls her out of the shelling and manages to get her on a ship home. Back in London, this pampered young woman is haunted by what she saw in France and by the captain who saved her. So she finds a flat in London and gets accepted into a nurses' training program, over her guardian's strong objections. For Elspeth Douglas is a woman with a mind of her own, which - as she herself says - is a blessing and a curse. She's going back to France to do her part, and to find the man she can't forget
