A timely and arresting debut that offers insight into the experiences of Black women in a predominantly white society. Three Black women are unexpectedly linked to a powerful white man in Stockholm as they navigate their new lives in a seemingly open yet deeply private culture. Kemi Adeyemi, a successful marketing executive, is drawn from the U.S. to Sweden by Jonny von Lundin, CEO of the largest marketing firm, to address a racially insensitive PR crisis. Meanwhile, Brittany-Rae Johnson, a former model turned flight attendant, meets Jonny on a flight to the U.S. and is thrust into a world of wealth and privilege, becoming the object of his unhealthy obsession. Somali refugee Muna Saheed, who has lost her family, finds work as a cleaner at Jonny's office while she seeks residency in Sweden and a sense of belonging. Told from the perspectives of these three women, the narrative explores critical social issues such as racism, classism, fetishization, and tokenism, highlighting the complexities of being a Black woman in a white-dominated society. The author, an award-winning Nigerian-American writer and photographer based in Sweden, presents her first novel with rich nuance and accessibility.
