En savoir plus sur le livre
Why were Hollywood producers eager to film behind the Iron Curtain? How did Western computer games gain traction in Czechoslovakia's youth paramilitary clubs? What were the ambitions of Finnish commercial television in broadcasting Soviet drama? While Cold War media cultures are often viewed through an East-West lens focused on conflict and propaganda, this work presents a nuanced perspective that highlights the intricate connections between media industries and cultures across Eastern and Western Europe, as well as the Global South. These connections were shaped by various pragmatic, technological, economic, political, and aesthetic factors, resulting in multiple, sometimes conflicting, meanings and functions. They have influenced contemporary media circulation, from film festivals to satellite networks and coproductions. By examining film, literature, radio, photography, computer games, and television, this text provides a transnational history of postwar media that encompasses Eastern and Western Europe, the Nordic countries, Cuba, the United States, and beyond. Contributors utilize extensive archival research to uncover how media transcended geopolitical boundaries, exploring the processes of translation, interpretation, and reception that facilitated these exchanges, alongside the enduring significance of media forms, content, industries, and infrastructures.
