This thesis explores the Zeitopern of the Weimar Republic, challenging the focus on their novelty by examining connections to past music, especially Wagner, and contemporary music drama. It questions the operas' ephemerality despite their initial popularity and investigates the balance between ambition for mass appeal and their rapid disappearance from the repertoire.
