Emperor and King Charles IV commissioned many monumental structures, with a particular focus on the Cathedral of St. Vitus at Prague Castle. He envisioned it as a Gothic masterpiece, symbolizing royal majesty and serving as the archbishop's see, a cult center for land patrons, and the site for royal coronations and burials. This cathedral holds a unique significance among churches in Europe. Matthias of Arras, the first architect, created an architectural wonder, initially modeling it after Southern French cathedrals but adapting the design to reflect local traditions. His successor, Peter Parler, introduced distinctive and innovative ideas, pushing architectural boundaries of the time. Today, the cathedral, originally dedicated to the unknown Sicilian martyr Vitus, continues to inspire awe with its grandeur. While it may not be the oldest, largest, or tallest cathedral in Europe, its breathtaking balance is unmatched. Measuring 124 meters in length, 60 meters in width, and over 33 meters in height, the Southern Spire, nearly 100 meters tall, stands as a prominent landmark of the city. Inside, over 8,000 people can gather to hear the word of God, making it a vibrant center of faith and community.
