Samuel Butler began writing The Way of All Flesh in 1872 and worked on it until 1884, intending to revise it before his death in 1902. Although dissatisfied with the manuscript, he wished for its publication. Missing chapters were reconstructed from his notes, and the novel is set mainly in 1867, with a postscript added in 1882.
