After starting his career as a newspaper reporter in New York City, he returned to Richmond, where he published stories in national magazines like Harper's and The Saturday Evening Post. His literary impact extended into the 1920s when he led a group of writers, dubbed "The James Branch Cabell School," which featured notable figures such as H. L. Mencken and Elinor Wylie.
