George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) was a prolific English novelist and war correspondent known for his historical adventure stories, popular in the late 19th century. His notable works include *The Dragon & The Raven*, *For The Temple*, *Under Drake's Flag*, and *In Freedom's Cause*. Born in Trumpington near Cambridge, Henty was a sickly child who developed a passion for reading during his prolonged illnesses. He attended Westminster School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he excelled in sports. He left university early to volunteer for the Army Hospital Commissariat during the Crimean War, where he witnessed the dire conditions faced by British soldiers. His vivid letters home caught the attention of his father, leading to their publication in *The Morning Advertiser*, which spurred his career as a war correspondent. After marrying Elizabeth Finucane and having four children, he began writing articles for the *Standard* following her death in 1865. Henty reported on various conflicts, including the Austro-Italian War and the Franco-Prussian War, and traveled extensively.
