The Treaty of Rome, signed fifty years ago, aimed to create a closer union among European nations through a common market and coordinated economic policies. However, this initiative faced backlash, particularly during successive enlargements, leading to increased Euroscepticism. The Maastricht Treaty further fueled opposition, as critics highlighted the erosion of national sovereignty and growing job insecurity stemming from market integration and liberalization. This seminar paper explores these dynamics within the context of European Union politics.
