Set in 1911, the story follows nine-year-old Lily, a Sicilian immigrant in New York City, who dreams of proving her maturity through singing and baking. Living in a cramped flat with her family, she yearns for a bigger role beyond household chores. When Mrs. Goldberg offers her a chance to learn baking, it seems like a dream come true. However, Lily soon discovers that growing up is complicated, as she navigates the challenges of bullies, independence, and her sister Margaret's struggle to balance school and work.
