Ashe Marson and his fellow lodger Joan Valentine, both writers for Mammoth Publishing Company, find themselves navigating personal and romantic entanglements. Joan encourages Ashe to overcome his discontent and seek new direction. Meanwhile, Freddie Threepwood, the Earl of Emsworth's younger son, is engaged to Aline Peters, daughter of American millionaire J. Preston Peters. In a bid to recover potentially damaging letters to a chorus girl, Freddie consults a shady fixer, R. Jones. During this time, his father inadvertently pockets a prized scarab from Aline's father, leading to tension. Aline is also pursued by George Emerson, a Hong Kong police officer, who visits Blandings Castle with her and her father. R. Jones discovers Joan's connection to Freddie, but she claims to have destroyed the letters. When Aline's father offers a reward for the scarab's return, Joan decides to pose as Aline's maid to claim it. Ashe, meanwhile, answers an ad from Mr. Peters for a valet, intending to retrieve the scarab. Upon arrival at Blandings, Ashe is intimidated by the butler, Beach, while Joan and Ashe separately plot to steal the scarab. Their antics lead to a chaotic encounter with Baxter, the secretary. As their plans unfold, they discover Freddie's financial troubles and his confession about the theft. In a twist, Aline elopes with George, leaving Freddie unexpectedly relieved.
