Counting on Grace

Set in 1910 Pownal, Vermont, the story follows 12-year-old Grace, who struggles to excel as a doffer in the mill alongside her best friend Arthur. Despite her determination to help her talented mother, her left-handedness hinders her work. Inspired by their teacher, Grace and Arthur secretly reach out to the Child Labor Board about child labor practices. Their lives take a turn when reformer Lewis Hine arrives to document their plight, leading to a transformative experience that reshapes Grace's identity and her family's prospects.
