Examining the New Zealand state-funded science system reform, this study highlights the distinction between running an entity as a business and in a businesslike manner. It analyzes the establishment of nine limited liability companies meant to advance scientific research, focusing on the metaphor of "The Crown Research Institutes are businesses."
