The story follows twelve-year-old Casey, who is sent to live with her grandmother in Chinatown after her father's hospitalization. Struggling with the unfamiliar environment and the absence of her father, Casey feels adrift. However, her grandmother shares stories about Casey's mother and their family's heritage, including an owl charm and her true Chinese name. As she learns about her roots and embraces her new surroundings, Casey begins to find a sense of belonging and identity in her family's history.
