At Risk

Focusing on literary depictions of adolescent artists, this work examines how they challenge limiting stereotypes in the post-Civil Rights era. Analyzing key texts from 1968 onward, it highlights the complex experiences of Black youth navigating hypervisibility and invisibility. The authors explore the implications of the "at risk" label, emphasizing the need for creative liberation during a critical developmental phase. Ultimately, the book reveals the unique possibilities and challenges of Black youth subjectivity in a time that demands honest representation and freedom to experiment.
