We Have Raised All of You: Motherhood in the South, 1750-1835

Examining motherhood in the early South, this study highlights the diverse roles white, black, and Native American women embraced, such as teacher, nurse, and politician. It reveals how these mothers drew strength from their communities and unique identities to shape child-rearing practices, asserting control over their lives. Focusing on Virginia and the Carolinas from 1750 to 1835, the author emphasizes the importance of a multicultural perspective in understanding maternal experiences, illustrating how women's struggles for empowerment were shaped by their distinct backgrounds and circumstances.
