Born into a wealthy family, Algernon Charles Swinburne gained fame with his verse dramas and the groundbreaking "Atalanta in Calydon." His work, known for intense lyricism and intricate imagery, often explored "indecent" themes, aligning with the art-for-art's-sake movement. Despite early success, his popularity waned due to personal struggles, including alcoholism and health issues. His friend Theodore Watts-Dunton intervened, isolating him to recover but limiting his creative output. Swinburne's legacy includes notable poetry and significant literary criticism before his death in 1909.
