Set against the backdrop of the declining Soviet Union, the narrative follows Dmitri, a physicist drawn into a web of KGB espionage orchestrated by Vasili, the head of the KGB. After defecting to the USA and securing positions at NSF and FermiLab, Dmitri faces challenges upon returning to a post-Soviet Russia, where he struggles to lead IHEP amidst the emigration of top scientists.
