Focusing on empathy, this study delves into how understanding characters in the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare, and their contemporaries enhances our grasp of their interactions. It highlights the acquisition of interpersonal knowledge through attunement to expressive phenomena, revealing the limitations of exaggeration and passion in articulating relationships. By analyzing characters' discourse and narrative context, the study uncovers their motivations and self-perceptions, ultimately exploring the significance of empathy in late medieval and early modern representations of the body and mind.
