Set in 1970, the story follows Andrew Carter, a shy mathematician who leaves Cambridge for a junior lectureship in northern England. He reconnects with his old friend Toby, who invites him to a family birthday celebration, where Andrew becomes a buffer against Toby's overbearing mother.
