Leonardo's work elicits enthusiasm, astonishment, and debate. A key approach to appreciating his art involves a deeper understanding of its material aspects, including the materials used, their preparation, and combinations, which allows for a thorough exploration of artistic intention while showcasing technical mastery. Additionally, examining how works age aids in their conservation. The CHARISMA project aims to achieve these goals by uniting the expertise of major European institutions specializing in cultural heritage conservation. This book compiles contributions from art historians, scientists, and conservators from an international meeting held in early 2012 at the National Gallery in London, coinciding with the exhibition 'Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan,' featuring the newly-conserved London version of the 'Virgin of the Rocks.' The workshop focused on Leonardo's artistic techniques and his workshop's practices. By juxtaposing various perspectives on the paintings and drawings of this iconic Italian Renaissance artist, the need for multidisciplinary viewpoints is emphasized to construct a more comprehensive history of the artworks. The articles reflect Leonardo's influence not only on his students and workshop collaborators but also on his contemporaries.
