A planet far away across the universe is totally destroyed by a series of asteroids. The planet was destroyed in cataclysm of flame but much of the detritus that remained form a huge cloud that was soon making its own way through the stars. The inhabitants of the planet had long anticipated this event and had fled into space to search for a new home. Their technology was such that it would have been possible to save the planet but it had not been deemed worthwhile. The planet had been mined of all its useful raw materials and its atmosphere was grossly polluted. They had conquered space travel years before so they had taken to space in search of a new home
