En savoir plus sur le livre

Set in New York from 1998 to 2001, ending shortly after 9/11, the story revolves around three main characters: Anna, a renowned Russian ballerina; Ali, a skilled heart doctor leading a transplant program; and Nancy, Ali's wife who tragically dies on 9/11. In May 1998, at Lincoln Center, Ali and his mother attend the premiere of Swan Lake, where Anna makes her American debut. During the performance, Anna unexpectedly collapses, marking the beginning of the narrative. The next day, Ali is called to consult on her condition, discovering she is in heart failure. Devastated by the news that her dancing career is over, Anna undergoes extensive testing. During her hospital stay, a bond forms between her and Ali, leading to a romantic relationship once her health improves. However, Anna's subsequent heart failure and their cultural differences—her atheism versus his Muslim faith, along with her insecurities from past experiences—strain their connection, reverting them to a doctor-patient dynamic. Meanwhile, Ali meets Nancy, an investment analyst at the World Trade Center, complicating his feelings for Anna. The narrative delves into the intertwined lives of these characters, exploring themes of love, cultural clashes, political turmoil, and the quest for personal truth amidst the backdrop of impending tragedy.
