Is death the end? Many believe it is not. In the first part of this collection, Ted Myers explores seventeen unique post-death experiences through first-person narratives. Each narrator, regardless of gender, sexuality, or race, offers a distinct perspective shaped by their life experiences. In “Bardo Train to Canarsie,” a Buddhist monk journeys through the bardo on a New York subway, accompanied only by a homeless Black poet. “Shop Till You Drop” features two middle-aged women who reunite in the afterlife's lingerie department at Bergdorf Goodman’s, indulging in limitless shopping. Meanwhile, “Ghost Academy” follows a Black high school teacher as he learns the costs of becoming a vengeful ghost. The second part, “I Dream in Black and White,” pays tribute to 1940s and ’50s noir films. A retired copywriter in his sixties experiences a captivating film noir dream each night, where he is young and vibrant. However, each morning, the dream slips away, leaving only fragments. Obsessed with recalling the dream, he consults a hypnotherapist, leading him into a realm where life, death, and dreams intertwine.
