This is the first volume of Lord Bacon's Essays or Counsels, Moral and Civil, originally published in 1625. The book consists of ten essays on various topics of morality and civic conduct, such as truth, revenge, envy, friendship, and atheism, among others. The essays are written in a concise, aphoristic style, typical of seventeenth-century literature, and are considered one of the most important works of English prose.
