Volker Scherliess, born on March 26, 1945, studied musicology, art history, and philosophy in Hamburg, with a year in Florence. He earned his doctorate in 1971 with a thesis on "Musical Notes on Works of Art of the Italian Renaissance." From 1972 to 1976, he worked at the music history department of the German Historical Institute in Rome, followed by a position as a scientific assistant at the University of Tübingen from 1977 to 1979. He served as a professor of musicology at the State University of Music in Trossingen from 1979 to 1991 and was a visiting lecturer at the universities of Freiburg and Basel, as well as a research fellow at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. From 1991 to 2010, he held a chair in musicology at the Lübeck University of Music and was a visiting fellow at the Max Planck Research Group in Florence during the winter semester of 2007/08. After retirement, he continued teaching at MHL from 2010 to 2015. Scherliess passed away on January 5, 2022, in Lübeck. His publications include works on Alban Berg and Gioacchino Rossini, as well as significant studies on Igor Stravinsky. He contributed extensively to modern music history and explored the connections between music and visual arts, literature, and themes such as "Thomas Mann and Music" in various texts and CD productions.
