Pocket Guide to Germany

En savoir plus sur le livre

"You do not come to Germany to act out resentments or to harass the inhabitants. We are not like the Nazis." This simple message demanded a great deal from its intended audience: the soldiers of the US Army in Europe. They risked their lives to free the world from Hitler and were urged not to take revenge on the Germans. In 1944, the US War Department recognized that soldiers needed clear behavioral guidelines. Thus, the 'Pocket Guide to Germany' was created. Almost all GIs who set foot in Germany in 1944/45 received this concise 48-page booklet. Although over two million copies were printed, the 'Pocket Guide' was long forgotten. This edition presents the original 1944 US military guide, which documents the unwavering commitment to treat defeated adversaries with dignity—out of respect for both the vanquished and the values of one's own society.
