Arch-swindler Moist Van Lipwig finds himself facing execution for his confidence crimes until Lord Vetinari, the ruler of Ankh-Morpork, offers him an unexpected job as Postmaster instead. With no other options, Moist reluctantly accepts, along with a hulking golem watchdog to ensure he fulfills his duties.
