Kidney stones have been a common ailment throughout history, yet many questions about their causes, treatment, and prevention remain unanswered. The Harnstein-Symposien Bonn-Wien aims to unite scientists from various fields related to urolithiasis, including medicine, urology, and biochemistry. An International Workshop was held in Tel Aviv on December 10 and 11, 1980, to explore uric acid lithiasis. Uric acid stones have been documented for millennia, with evidence found in Egyptian mummies and ancient remains from Arizona. As living standards rise and purine intake increases, the prevalence of uric acid lithiasis is also on the rise. Significant advancements have been made in understanding the mechanisms behind uric acid overproduction, along with the etiology, prevention, and treatment of uric acid stones. Consequently, uric acid lithiasis can now be effectively prevented and treated, with most stones dissolvable in vivo. The workshop featured reviews from leading experts on various aspects of uric acid metabolism, including biochemistry, pathology, and nutrition, presenting valuable insights and findings from recent studies.
