At 16, I took my first helicopter flight with my cousin Larry Mason, a Channel 9 news pilot in Cincinnati, which ignited my passion for flying. After graduating from Beavercreek High School in 1966, I attended Ohio State University to pursue teaching. However, my focus on social life led to poor grades, preventing my return to the university. I briefly attended a junior college but faced the looming draft. After receiving my draft notice, I enlisted and was captivated by the prospect of Warrant Officer Flight School. Basic Training commenced in April 1968, and I graduated from flight school in April 1969. Selected for Dustoff, I underwent an accelerated Combat Medic's Course at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, before arriving in Vietnam on July 4, 1969. Assigned to the 237th Medical Detachment, I earned the call sign "Dustoff 7-1-1." Just three months into combat flying, I became an Aircraft Commander on November 11, 1969, but was wounded shortly after on a night mission. I returned to the U.S. and served as a Training, Advising, and Counseling Officer until my discharge in April 1971. Recently, I’ve joined American Huey 369 in Indiana, a group dedicated to restoring Huey helicopters and honoring veterans, particularly those from Vietnam. The organization showcases these restored helicopters at various events, celebrating the legacy of service.
