En savoir plus sur le livre

In 1789, Pierre Adet, a young French peasant, is outraged by the oppression of his fellow villagers, particularly after his brother-in-law faces execution for poaching. Driven by desperation, he leads a mob against the Duc de Kernogan but encounters the Duc's daughter, Yvonne, during their attack. In a moment of rage, Pierre assaults her, vowing that she will forever bear the marks of his contempt. The Duc's forces quickly disperse the mob, leaving Pierre injured and on the run. In a cruel twist, the Duc ensures that Pierre's father is hanged for his son's actions. By 1793, Pierre, now living in England as Martin-Roget, has reinvented himself and gained favor with the Duc, who is unaware of his true identity or intentions. Martin-Roget plans to marry Yvonne and lure her and her father back to France for revenge. However, complications arise when Yvonne elopes with Lord Antony Dewhurst. The Duc, believing a marriage to Martin-Roget would benefit the royalist cause, is enraged and refuses to acknowledge Yvonne's marriage. Martin-Roget manipulates the situation, convincing the Duc to help him separate Yvonne from Lord Tony. He ultimately kidnaps her, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation that calls for the intervention of The Scarlet Pimpernel to rescue her.
