    Ohromný spletitý žalář vyhloubený ve skále, v němž si bez denního světla odpykávají trest stovky či tisíce vězňů – taková je Vinkula města Traxu, jejíž správy se ujal mučitelský tovaryš Severián. Jedná se pro něj o druhou šanci pokorně uplatnit znalosti a dovednosti, které mu cechovní mistři vštěpovali už odmala.Další osudový zvrat však na sebe nenechá dlouho čekat a Severián se znovu stává psancem čelícím dlouhé řadě nestvůr: ohnivému přízraku slídícímu po jeho stopě, šelmě vstřebávající s masem obětí také jejich osobnost, dvouhlavému tyranovi i starým známým, které mylně pokládal za neškodné a politováníhodné. A každý krok jej přibližuje k frontové linii na severu…Ve třetím díle tetralogie Kniha Nového Slunce pokračuje pouť plná nebezpečí a pokušení, na níž se Severián učí lépe rozumět světu i sám sobě a postupně odhaluje obrysy velkého úkolu, před nímž stojí a k němuž jeho pouť horami i džunglemi umírajícího světa směřuje.
