    Maciupek jest nieśmiały i strachliwy. Jest też bardzo samotny. Pewnego dnia opuszcza dom i wyrusza w podróż. Podczas wędrówki mija rozmaite stworzonka, ale nie starcza mu odwagi, by zawrzeć z nimi znajomość. Czy zdoła znaleźć pocieszenie i przyjaciela? A może ktoś potrzebuje pomocy bardziej niż on? Z bohaterem tej mądrej i urokliwej historii identyfikować się mogą nie tylko dzieci. Książka uczy, jak pokonywać własne lęki i ograniczenia. I jak zjednywać sobie przyjaciół. To także piękna opowieść o miłości. Tove Jansson (1914–2001) marzyła, by zostać latarnikiem, a stała się znaną na całym świecie pisarką, malarką, ilustratorką i rysowniczką komiksów. Zadebiutowała jako graficzka prasowa w 1928 roku – miała wtedy niespełna 14 lat. Studiowała malarstwo w Sztokholmie, Helsinkach i Paryżu. Pierwszy raz wzięła udział w wystawie w 1933 roku i wtedy też wydała pierwszą książkę z własnymi ilustracjami. W latach czterdziestych zaczęła pisać i publikować utwory w różnych periodykach. Jesienią 1945 roku wyszła drukiem pierwsza część muminkowej sagi: „Małe trolle i duża powódź”. Po dwóch kolejnych powieściach: „Komecie nad Doliną Muminków” (1946) i „W Dolinie Muminków” (1948) pisarka zyskała ogromną popularność, a jej bohaterowie na stałe zagościli w domach i sercach czytelników.
