Jen několik dní předtím je nalezen mrtev bratr Conchobhar, strážce posvátného meče. Sestra Fidelma a její bratr král se obávají, že se vrah pokusil ukrást meč, který symbolizuje královu moc. Začínají se šířit fámy o pokusu svrhnout krále, když na hrad dorazí zprávy, že v nedalekém přístavu přistála loď, která má na palubě nemocné morem. V nastalém strachu a panice musí Fidelma, Enda a Eadulf dopadnout vraha dřív, než si smrt začne vybírat svou daň.
