Der expressionistische Bildhauer Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949) gehörte mit Heinrich Vogeler und Paula Modersohn-Becker zum Künstlerkreis in Worpswede. Als Mitglied der Künstlerkolonie Darmstadt erarbeitete er bereits zuvor ein skulpturenreiches Gesamtkunstwerk im Platanenhain auf der Mathildenhöhe, das zu seinen Hauptwerken zählt.

Bernhard Hoetger's sculptures for the Plane Tree Grove on the Mathildenhöhe were the artistic highlight of the last exhibition of the Darmstadt artists' colony in 1914: over 40 sculptural works across the entire garden area of the Mathildenhöhe, constituting an emphatic artistic synthesis of the circle of life. This volume discusses the 40 sculptures within the context of the Art Nouveau movement in Germany. Zum ersten Mal präsentiert eine Publikation die Entstehung und Entwicklung der britischen Pop Art derart umfassend und spartenübergreifend. Sechzig Jahre nach der legendären Ausstellung this is tomorrow im Jahr 1956 in London präsentieren Gemälde, Skulpturen, Architekturmodelle, Plakate, Fotografien, Fernsehbeiträge, Musik und Film den markanten Kulturwandel in Großbritannien von den späten 1940er-Jahren bis zum Ende der 1960er-Jahre. Ein Stadtparcours mit Straßen, Plätzen und Künstlerhäusern ermöglicht einen lebendigen Einblick in die „Swinging Sixties“. Der umfangreich bebilderte Katalog zeigt rund 200 Arbeiten von „Ikonen“ wie Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, David Hockney, R. B. Kitaj, aber auch vielen anderen Protagonisten der Pop Art: den Künstlerinnen Pauline Boty und Jann Haworth sowie den Architekten Cedric Price und Archigram.

Der Katalog, herausgegeben von Ralf Beil und Holger Broeker, enthält neben zahlreichen Künstlerstatements und literarischen Texten von Jorge Luis Borges, Essays von Ralf Beil und Holger Broeker sowie Werktexte u. a. von Rodrigo Alonso, Klaus Biesenbach, Hans-Michael Herzog, Clara Montero, Virginia Pérez-Ratton, Raphael Rubinstein, Katrin Steffen und Raúl Zamudio.

Mit seinem Film L’ Âge d’or, uraufgeführt am 29. November 1930, traf Luis Buñuel einen Nerv: Er entfaltete gesellschaftliche Wirksamkeit mit radikalen, teils skandalträchtigen Mitteln. 50 Jahre lang verboten, hat Buñuels frühes surrealistisches Meisterwerk bis heute großen Einfluss auf das künstlerische Medium Film. L’ Âge d’or folgt dem Konstruktionsprinzip eines Cadavre Exquis und besteht aus sechs einzelnen, miteinander verbundenen Sequenzen. Dieser Form folgt Der Stachel des Skorpions mit eigenwilligen Neuinterpretationen von Buñuels Episoden durch die internationalen GegenwartskünstlerInnen John Bock, Chicks on Speed, Keren Cytter, M + M, Julian Rosefeldt und Tobias Zielony. Die eigens für das Gemeinschaftsprojekt geschaffenen Arbeiten sind radikale Neuschöpfungen, wie sich an den umfangreichen Bildstrecken und originalen Filmmanuskripten in der Publikation ablesen lässt. Before John Cage (1912-1992), few consistently questioned the boundaries of music and its connections to art and everyday life. Alongside figures like Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp, Nam June Paik, and Joseph Beuys, Cage stands as a key strategist and pioneer of twentieth-century music and art. This publication explores twelve fundamental strategies in art and music since 1900: recording, collage, silence, destruction, calculation, coincidence, feeling, thought, belief, furnishing, repetition, and playing. It features interdisciplinary essays by art and music theorists, showcasing exemplary works and original sources from artists, musicians, and composers. Visual documentation highlights the diverse interactions between music and art, including contributions from Laurie Anderson, Robert Filliou, Anri Sala, and Iannis Xenakis. The exhibition schedule includes the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt from May 13 to September 9, 2012. Notable artists presented include Nevin Aladag, Luciano Berio, Janet Cardiff/George Bures Miller, Bruce Nauman, and Frank Zappa, among others, illustrating the rich tapestry of parallel and overlapping activities in the creative landscape.

First theorized by composer Richard Wagner, the total artwork, or "gesamtkunstwerk," proposed a synthesis of all arts towards a single, unified spectacle. Wagner's ambitious conception flowered in the early twentieth century throughout numerous avant gardes, particularly in German Expressionism, where art forms cross-pollinated and collaborated to a remarkable degree. Past considerations of Expressionism have tended to focus only on individual genres, making The Total Artwork in Art, Film, Literature, Theater, Dance and Architecture 1905-1925 the first-ever publication to examine the interplay between these forms. Here, masterpieces of Expressionist film such as Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are united with set designs; the works of painters and set designers such as Ernst Barlach, Otto Bartning, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka and Ludwig Meidner are examined, alongside film stills by César Klein and Hans Poelzig; and documents by Bruno Taut and Ernst Toller, music scores by Paul Hindemith, poster art, dance masks and stage photographs provide historical and archival background, building a unique panorama of the Expressionist period.
