The loop is a pervasive element in various forms of media, from music and video art to hotel lobbies and living spaces, where flickering flames and darting fish are displayed on monitors. This self-contained circuit has been a significant theme in cultural history, alchemy, religion, and philosophy since antiquity. An exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg offers a comprehensive examination of the loop phenomenon across art, film, architecture, music, literature, and cultural history, exploring its implications in terms of time, place, form, and content. Accompanying the exhibition is a scholarly catalogue edited by Ralf Beil, which delves into this multifaceted theme through the lenses of science, literature, and creativity. The catalogue features thirteen essays, numerous original sources, and over three hundred illustrations, providing a foundational exploration that continually unveils new perspectives and insights. It includes works by notable artists and thinkers such as Adel Abdessemed, Marina Abramović, Francis Alÿs, Joseph Beuys, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and many others. The exhibition runs from October 29, 2017, to February 18, 2018, at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.
