The story follows Nicholas Nickleby, who, after his father's death and loss of family wealth, seeks help from his uncle Ralph in London. Ralph, a cruel businessman, offers Nicholas a low-paying job with Wackford Squeers at a Yorkshire school, Dotheboys Hall. There, Nicholas discovers Squeers' exploitation of vulnerable children, who are mistreated for profit. Amidst this grim reality, Nicholas grapples with his moral convictions and the harshness of his new life, while a sympathetic clerk, Newman Noggs, offers him a glimmer of hope.
