Excerpt from Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases: Classified and Arranged to Facilitate the Expression of Ideas and Assist in Literary Composition. The first edition was published in 1852, followed by a second in the spring of the same year. The third edition, released in 1855, was stereotyped. Since then, the work has been reprinted with minimal changes, leading to the wear of the original plates. In the latter years of the author's life, which ended in September 1869, he focused on gathering additional words and phrases for an expanded edition he had envisioned but did not complete.
