Set in the Jim Crow South of the 1930s, the story follows Neomi Jean Hattisburg, a young Black woman grappling with her identity. Raised by a father who works as a railroad porter and a mother who is a domestic worker, Neomi is instilled with faith and respect. However, her confusion deepens due to her appearance, which resembles that of a White person, leading to complex interactions and treatment from both White individuals and fellow Black community members.
