Le héros de ce roman, qui se déroule en 1956, est un vieux colonel vivant avec sa femme dans un village tropical colombien, attendant depuis cinquante ans sa pension de vétéran. Dans ce village sans nom, l'état d'urgence de la dictature militaire est devenu la norme pour ses habitants. La vie est stagnante, mais ils espèrent un changement, la plupart passivement, quelques-uns activement. Parmi les actifs se trouvent le médecin et les ouvriers d'un atelier de couture déguisé en cellule de résistance, ainsi que le colonel avec son coq de combat, un héritage de son fils Agostin, abattu pour avoir distribué des tracts illégaux. Le colonel et sa femme asthmatique n'ont plus rien à manger. Le bateau postal, qu'il attend chaque vendredi, n'apporte aucune nouvelle de sa pension. Le coq doit être vendu, mais le colonel n'arrive pas à se résoudre à le faire. Le jour où il voit le coq acclamé dans l'arène, il réalise que celui-ci représente pour lui et le village un symbole d'espoir. À travers un langage extrêmement concis et précis, l'auteur aborde la violence, thème central du continent, avec colère et tendresse.

Un village colombien, qui a connu la guerre civile, vit en paix depuis que le maire a rétabli l'ordre parla terreur. Mais, un soir, les premiers tracts anonymes apparaissent sur quelques portes. Celui que lit César Montero l'amène aussitôt à tuer. Et les tracts se multiplient , semant la discorde dans les familles, ravivant les gaines, réveillant dans la mémoire de chacun les combines, les exactions, les crimes commis dans le passé. Le curé Angel, d'abord indifférent, demande finalement au maire de prendre des mesures d'autorité devant ce " cas de terrorisme contre l'ordre moral ". Rien n'empêche les tracts de proliférer. Le maire décide de revenir à la répression. La paix mensongère est terminée, le village est retourné à son enfer quotidien.

Le héros du roman de García Márquez est la figure légendaire de Simon Bolívar, un acteur clé du mouvement latino-américain pour l'indépendance. Politicien et général, il devient président de la Colombie en 1819 et de Pérou en 1821. L'auteur dépeint les derniers mois de sa vie, sa dernière traversée sur le fleuve Magdalena et sa mort dans la solitude à la finca de San Pedro Alejandrino, près de la côte caribéenne. Plutôt que de se concentrer sur ses succès ou échecs militaires et politiques, García Márquez explore l'histoire d'un homme réalisant avec étonnement que sa vie lui échappe, qu'il se retrouve seul face à l'histoire. L'œuvre abandonne le récit exclusivement "magique" pour s'orienter davantage vers la factualité, bien que les faits historiques soient traités de manière libre. On retrouve la thématique de la solitude, ainsi que le motif du labyrinthe du monde. Bolívar apparaît presque comme un personnage de Macondo, ou comme un alter ego de l'auteur au XXe siècle.

“A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is a short story that begins with a couple, Pelayo and Elisenda, finding a very old man in their courtyard during a stormy afternoon. They watch in astonishment the enormous wings attached to the body of the old man as he struggles to get up from the mud. Their neighbour comes over and lets them know that the old man is an angel. Pelayo locks the angel in a chicken coop overnight. Tired of having too many visitors, the couple decides to charge an entrance fee to see the angel. The story progresses and describes the community's reduction of the old man to a freak and its brief fascination with him, only to be replaced with a new spectacle.
